Canadian is finalist for The Best Jobs in the World contest

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Salina Siu is one of 150 finalists advancing to the second round of Tourism Australia’s latest The Best Jobs in the World competition. About 600,000 people worldwide registered for six jobs available Down Under and the 24-year-old Surrey resident is the only Canadian amongst the 25 people shortlisted for the Chief Funster position.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I can’t believe it’s happening,” says Siu, who recently graduated from Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business and finished an internship with SAP doing social-media marketing. “I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching trying to figure out what I want out of life and an adventure to Australia is just what I need.”

Chief Funster, which would be based in Sydney, is the most sought-after role in the contest and would turn the winner into an instant VIP with access to all the festivals and events the city has to offer. A background in social media is crucial as the Chief Funster will be live-tweeting, hashtagging and posting photos, videos and interviews to share Sydney’s culture with the rest of the world.

The job lasts six months and includes a $50,000 (AUS) salary plus an additional $50,000 (AUS) to cover accommodation and travel expenses.

Siu made it to the second round after judges selected her based on a 30-second video she submitted explaining why she was the best person for the job. The video highlighted events she’s participated in and also showcased her personal YouTube channel, which has more than 58,000 subscribers and 10 million views. Paired with a glimpse into her life and a sense of humour, Siu won over the judges as the only person from Metro Vancouver in the shortlist for all six positions.

In order to advance to the final round, all finalists have to demonstrate their reach and influence. Siu plans to write a blog post and include YouTube videos featuring high-profile endorsements, including one from SFU president Andrew Petter.

On May 15, the second shortlist will be announced and the top three finalists for each job will be flown to Australia for a week-long interview process with the final results announced June 21.

“It’s going to be hard to make it all the way to the end since all the finalists are strong competitors,” says Siu, “but I’ve got a great support network and I’m hopeful this dream job will become a reality for me.”
