I’m a finalist in the ‘Best Jobs in the World’ competition!!

Posted on April 24, 2013

WOWWW!!! I just found out I have a 1/25 chance in becoming the next Chief Funster of Australia!!

Tourism Australia sent me a letter (read it here) confirming that out of 600,000 registrations from around the world, I made the cut into the 150 shortlist for the six positions in the ‘Best Jobs in the World’ competition! And I’m the only one from Canada shortlisted for Chief Funster. Can you believe it?!

This is definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity and I can’t believe it’s happening to me! It’s coming at a perfect time too as I recently graduated from Simon Fraser University with a BBA in marketing and entrepreneurship and just finished an internship at SAP doing social media marketing. I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching trying to figure out what I want out of life and an adventure to Australia would be just the thing I need!

The most sought-after role, Chief Funster, will turn the winner into an instant Sydney VIP with access to all the festivals and events that the city down under has to offer. A background in social media is crucial as the Chief Funster will be live-tweeting, hashtagging and posting photos, videos and interviews to share Sydney’s culture with the rest of the world.

Hosted by Tourism Australia, this major international competition has six dream jobs up for grabs, which all include an attractive six month salary package worth $100,000! Read more about the positions here.

  • Chief Funster (New South Wales)
  • Outback Adventurer (Northern Territory)
  • Park Ranger (Queensland)
  • Wildlife Caretaker (South Australia)
  • Lifestyle Photographer (Melbourne)
  • Taste Master (Western Australia)

In the first round of the contest, I submitted a 30 second video explaining why I am the best person for the job by highlighting the events I’ve participated in and my YouTube channel, which has over 58,000 subscribers and 10 million views. Paired with a glimpse into my life and a sense of humor, I won over the judges as the only person from Vancouver in the 150 shortlist for six positions.

I’m extremely proud of myself for making it this far in the competition already because I know round two will be even harder! Tourism Australia is giving us until May 8, 2013 (two weeks) to:

  • Generate as much media attention as possible for TV, newspapers, online, etc. Any type of media!
  • Find the biggest, most influential, high profile people in our network and get them to give us a video or written endorsements that we’re the best person for this job!

On May 15, 2013, the second shortlist will be announced and the top three finalists from each job (total of 18 finalists) will be flown to Australia for a week long interview process with the final six winners announced on June 21, 2013!

Read the follow up post which includes my submission for this competition!
