DIY Workout T-Shirt Tutorial

Looking for a new workout t-shirt? Take an old t-shirt and turn it into this easy workout top. I’m going to show you guys 3 different looks with just one step!

I’m using an Anvil Sustainable t-shirt made of 50% cotton and 50% recycled polyester in a size small.

I designed the t-shirt when I was working at SAP doing social media marketing for an online contest and marketing campaign that I ran.

Look 1: Cut a line 5″ up from the bottom of the t-shirt and tie tabs

This is a great way to give some shape to an oversized t-shirt with one simple cut! Just cut a line 5 inches up from the bottom hem of the t-shirt. Then just tie the two corners into a double knot and you’ll have a defined band giving your t-shirt some shape!

Look 2: Pull the hem up to your waist and let the excess fabric fall over it

Simply pull the bottom of the shirt up to your waist, and have the excess fabric drape over. You’ll get a loose crop top look without any other steps!cut-up-t-shirt-customize-diy-salina-siu-salinabear-how-to-workout-oversized-XL-10

Look 3: Cut the center line of your t-shirt up to your waist/belly button

Measure how far up you want the slit to be cut. For me, this was an additional 4 inches (for a total of 9 inches). Then you need to cut the t-shirt shorter and create tabs at the front of the shirt. Fold the t-shirt in half sideways – bring the sides of the t-shirt together and you should see a side view of the shirt. Now you can cut tabs up and then straight across to the back of the shirt.

Don’t cut the tabs all the way up to the 9 inches mark before you check to see how it sits when you’re wearing the shirt. The higher up you cut, the more skin will show. You can also cut the tabs into points to finish off the look!

Optional: Cut out the collar and sleeves to create a tank top or off the shoulder look but I didn’t include this in the video tutorial.
